UNCLOS Group Training Services

For some years the UNCLOS Group held an annual international training programme for representatives of nations wishing to develop their maritime territory. It provided a hands-on practical understanding of the legal and technical requirements of the Law of the Sea. This course has now finished. However, to follow up on its success and as part of our commitment to education, members of the group are now closely involved with a new Masters level postgraduate course, MSc in Marine Science, Policy and Law. This course aims to provide the student with specialised training in the skills required for the development of a career in international science-based policy in areas related to the protection and management of the marine environment.

Masters degree programme

This new 12 month taught postgraduate Masters degree programme will provide specialised training in the skills required for careers in international science-based policy in areas related to the protection and management of the marine environment.

Graduates will acquire a broad knowledge of the multi-disciplinary science that underpins environmental policy making and an introduction to international law particularly focussing on policy-related issues. Key skills in evidence based policy making will be developed through workshops and role play exercises underpinned by development of advanced level understanding of policy in specialist case studies.

Further details

Two pathways will be offered at the outset; International boundaries and resources and Climate change and environmental protection. The project work will involve a placement in a relevant area of policy making and a dissertation prepared under the supervision of a member of University staff.

This course is offered via the University of Southampton's School of Ocean and Earth Science. Further details about the course and how to apply can be found on the SOES website at http://http://http://www.southampton.ac.uk/soes/pgstudy/mscmres/mspl.html; you can download a flyer using the link below.
